The Adventure
As a fly fishing guide who has grown up on the waters of the Bahamas, I still learn something new every time I pick up the rod. If you are new to the sport of fly fishing, I will spend instructional time with you to give you the foundations for a great experience and lifetime of adventure. If you are experienced with the fly rod I will get out of your way, let you fish, and we will learn from each other.
We will primarily be fishing for Bonefish; however we are always prepared for Permit, Barracudas, Sharks and other surprises! If needed, new Orvis equipment is provided 9-11 weight.
The Boat Trip
The "Secret Soul" is a 2007 B2 by Beavertail, one of the best technical skiffs available. The boat will get you into skinny water and provide a safe and comfortable ride getting there and back.
The second boat to be added to Secret Soul is a 2009 Beavertail BTX. The boys at Beavertail have done it again, producing another great shallow water skiff. The Lucky Dog can pole in 5 inches and get to the skinny water where silver tails glisten. We feel like the luckiest guys in the world to be able to do what we do and call it work. We hope you will come along and enjoy a day with us and maybe you will feel like a Lucky Dog too.
All guests are picked up at the hotel or if you are on a cruise ship I will get you when your ship disembarks at the dock.
I trailer my boat around the Island, so pick up times at hotels are usually early 6:30-7:00, traffic in paradise is crazy. The average drive time is 20 minutes to put in and then 15 minutes to run to the flats.
Every trip is contingent on weather and your safety is my priority.
What size fish can you expect? Typically we see 3-5 pound fish and with regularity see 6-10 pound fish. We fish school fish that range from 2-5 pounds but these schools hold large fish as well, and we sight fish over expansive flats and creeks where larger singles and doubles cruise.
The Wading Trip
A half day guided wading trip includes all fishing equipment, boots, drinks, snacks and transportation. You will travel by vehicle to remote flats for a tranquil experience of wading on beautiful Bahamian flats. Few angling experiences compare to the thrill of stalking Bonefish on shallow flats. Your guide will help you with all the saltwater techniques you need to make this a rewarding experience. This trip is dependent on tides and weather conditions.
Fish and Casting
Most days you will get shots at fish. If I could guarantee that, I would be your lawyer not your guide, but we have good numbers of fish and generally they are good size. The thing that I cannot emphasize enough is to be prepared to cast in wind. I would recommend that if you are not up to speed on your casting that you find an instructor in your home town that can get you ready for a saltwater trip. Sandy Morret told me one day that, "all you can do is give the client a shot, but they can't buy that last 40-60 feet". Please practice your casting before you come (I would recommend Joan Wulfs vidio on Dynamics of Fly Casting or some other instructional video on casting if an instructor is not available.).
Intro to Saltwater Fly Fishing Experience
If you are new to the sport we offer a one day instructional clinic that will give you the basics of casting and an introduction to Bonefishing. This clinic provides several hours of casting instruction and several hours of wade or skiff fishing and is a wonderful way to get started or refresh your skills. If you are a more advanced caster we can tailor the experience to your needs. The cost is $700 for the day.
